{"id":43,"date":"2020-01-27T18:34:42","date_gmt":"2020-01-27T18:34:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nichevisuals.com\/blog\/?p=43"},"modified":"2021-04-22T16:41:52","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T16:41:52","slug":"time-lapse-how-to-compress-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nichevisuals.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/27\/time-lapse-how-to-compress-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Time Lapse Videography- How to Compress Time"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As a videographer, I am always trying to effectively tell a story.&nbsp;I have discovered that one of the most effective storytelling tools in video production is the time lapse.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a time lapse you can compress a long and static event into a short engaging video clip.\u00a0An effective use of a time lapse videography is a party like the clip below where people mingle around but don\u2019t do anything too interesting to capture as video clip.\u00a0As a single video shot this would be as interesting as watching grass grow.\u00a0 However, when compressed into about 3-5 seconds the video clip is engaging, and it tells a story without boring the viewer.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"party time lapse 1\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/318351351?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consider Your Subject for your Time Lapse Videography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When making a time lapse there are few things to consider.\u00a0First, what is it that we want to focus on.\u00a0 The image that we want the viewer to lock on should be still or slowly progressing\/regressing.\u00a0On the other hand, the figures or characters moving around will be moving fast and so we want to blur them out.\u00a0In video production of a time lapse this is achieved through motion blur with the use of a slow shutter speed.\u00a0The shutter speed in the above mentioned video clip was set at 1\/3 sec and we get a ghosting effect of the people.\u00a0 Hence, the viewer perceives the activity but is focused on the aesthetics of the room and people who are still or moving slow.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add Movement to your Videography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another important element to consider when setting up a time lapse video is movement.\u00a0As discussed earlier, repetitive movements like people mingling around should be blurred.\u00a0 However if we want to add drama to the video we can SLOWLY move the camera to the point of focus<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"move to\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/318352439?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"525\" height=\"224\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Or we can SLOWLY move around the subject like here.&nbsp;&nbsp;The movement should be just above the threshold of being noticed because this type of movement is effective if it is felt rather than seen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"mopve around\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/318352825?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The slow dramatic movement of the camera in a time lapse is achieved by using a mechanized slider. &nbsp;The slider moves the camera progressively from start to end point every time a picture is being taken.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"523\" src=\"https:\/\/nichevisuals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/0-1-1024x523.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nichevisuals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/0-1-1024x523.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/nichevisuals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/0-1-300x153.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/nichevisuals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/0-1-768x393.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/nichevisuals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/0-1-1536x785.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/nichevisuals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/0-1-2048x1047.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alternative Methods of Time Lapse Videography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a videographer and a filmmaker, I don\u2019t always set up a traditional time lapse where camera takes picture over set period of time.\u00a0Sometimes I will film a long video clip knowing that I will manipulate the time.\u00a0For instance, I will speed up a gimbal video clip to make the a scene more dynamic.\u00a0An advantage of this video production technique is that I can slow down the clip at specific moment to highlight something interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"change time\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/318353312?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay;
